Confused about fastdox or go mobile? You've come to the right place.

We have put together a list of the most common questions covering your digital pen, printing and fastdox. If you can't find what you need please explore the other areas of the fastdox support centre or post a question to our support community.

How long is the software trial period?

A: Thirty (30) days.

Where can the user see a list of licensed pens in the software?

You can find it here: Setup > Writing.

If a pen will dock at several computers, does the user need to enter the license key at each computer?

No. A pen need only be licensed once at any computer where the software is installed, after which it will work with any other computer where the software is installed.

Does the user need to enter the pen license key at the computer where the pen will be used?

No. A pen may be licensed at any computer where the software is installed.

What happens if two unlicensed pens have written on a disabled document and one pen gets licensed?

The document will remain disabled. After the trial period ends, a document will become and remain disabled until all pens that wrote on it are licensed.

What happens to disabled documents after the pen has been licensed?

They are enabled right away. In some cases, the user may need to select Tools > Refresh, or press F5, to see the change.

After the trial period ends, what changes?

After the trial period ends, all documents that have received ink from one or more unlicensed pens are disabled. This will manifest itself in the user interface in the following ways:

  • Most toolbar buttons, and corresponding menu commands, are disabled

faq3.jpg

The following message is displayed above the document preview pane.

faq2.jpg

The Pen Validation screen appears occasionally, listing which pen(s) do not appear to be licensed and listing the following choices:

  • Validate pen – Checks for updated pen licensing information. If the pen was licensed at another computer, its record will be added and the document will be enabled.
  • License pen – Gives the user the opportunity to license the pen by entering a pen license key. The same thing can be done at Setup > Writing > Add Pen.
  • Remind me later – Hides the Pen Validation screen for a few minutes.

faq1.jpg

In addition to these user interface changes, another important limitation is imposed on Actions once the trial period ends. Specifically, all Actions are prohibited from running on disabled documents, except for the default Action that opens the software.

These steps essentially limit the user’s options (once the trial period ends) to only previewing the document from within the software. Documents cannot be opened, saved, exported, emailed, etc, either by manual steps or by custom Actions.

Is the software fully functional during the trial period?

Yes.

Printing

This following FAQ addresses the process of installing a new printer driver. Although each printer manufacturer may have slightly different steps in this process, the principles provided here should be true in all cases.

Are there any printing restrictions?
Due to the variety in printers and their capabilities, fastdox restricts the maximum number of pages printed for a single document to 100 pages. There is also a limit in terms of the maximum number of copies that can be selected in the print dialogue. This is set to 25 copies per print session.
How do I find out if there’s a PostScript driver available for my printer?
The best source of this information will be the printer manufacturer’s website. Most sites allow you to search by printer model and operating system. When you see a list of drivers for your printer, look specifically for PostScript, PS or PS3. Any driver that mentions only “PostScript emulation” is likely a PCL driver and not a true PostScript driver. Any driver that mentions being “GDI” or “host-based” is not a PostScript driver.
Why should I install a new printer driver?
While both GDI (host-based) drivers and PostScript drivers work - and we expect PCL drivers to soon work as well - postScript drivers are likely continue to provide superior flexibility and print speed.
Once I find a PostScript driver for my printer, what do I need to do?
The best source of this information will be the printer manufacturer’s website. Look for instructions, and then follow them closely and completely.

If explicit instructions are not provided, the steps below will guide you through the necessary steps of downloading, extracting and installing. To complete installation of a PostScript driver, all three steps usually must be completed.

Downloading means saving the file to your computer, just like any other file you download from the Internet.

Extracting means running the file that you downloaded. In most cases, this will run a program that unpacks your printer files into a new folder. Sometimes you can choose the folder to use, but usually it will be decided for you and will often be immediately off of the C:\ drive, e.g. C:\PrinterMfrName\PrinterModelName\...

Installing means adding a new Windows printer that uses the unpacked files. Begin installing at the Windows printer list by clicking “Add a printer”.
At the Install Printer Driver step (left screenshot below), click Have Disk…, then click Browse… on the next screen (right screenshot below), and then navigate to the folder where the printer driver files were unpacked during the extracting step. You’ll be looking for a file with an INF extension, e.g., OP745PS.INF is the INF file for an OKI C6150 on Windows 7.
printer_install.jpg

Once you find the correct INF file, the rest of installation goes through quite logically. As a result, you should now see a new “PS” printer in your list of installed Windows printers.

Note: After printer installation is complete in Windows, you will still need to set up the new printer with the digital writing application (Setup > Printing > Add Printer).

Set pen time
When you first install fastdox and set up your pen, you should ensure that you select the update pen time from within the Anoto Pen Director application when the pen is docked. This will set the pen time to match the PC on which the pen is configured. If the pen needs updating at a later stage, simply dock the pen into the PC to redo the action.
Digital pen compatiblity
The following will help you determine if your digital pen is compatible with fastdox and other digital pen products such as Notobook.

Destiny IO2 Pen (Black) – compatible with Fastdox, Destiny Notobook, M3 Easybook and IO Notobook.

Old style Logitech Digital Pen – NOT compatible

iosilverblack.jpgLogitech Pen (black with silver stripe) ’06 version, USB only. NOT compatible

Logitech Silver Pen – USB only – requires firmware upgrade to be compatible with Destiny Notobook and Fastdox for docking only.

How do I reset the pen?

To reset the digital pen:

  1. Take off the digital pen cap.
  2. Reset the digital pen by gently tapping the reset button with a paper clip or pencil
Tip. You will not lose any information stored in the digital pen apart from the device
pairing information.

If the digital pen is still frozen after performing a reset, you can perform a master
reset to restore the digital pen to the factory settings. Use this procedure only
as a last resort because you will lose all the information in the digital pen’s
memory.

To perform a master reset, do the following:
  1. Take off the digital pen cap and then press the pen tip on a surface while you press the reset button with a paper clip or pencil tip.
  2. Continue pressing the digital pen to the surface while you remove the paper clip or pencil tip from the reset button.
  3. Hold the digital pen to the surface until thebattery, memory, and Bluetooth status LEDs stop blinking red, and then lift the pen. The digital pen restarts and vibrates to indicate that it can be used again.
My pen buzzes while I am writing on the form

The pen should not buzz when writing, apart from the short ‘thuds’ the pen makes when you tick the Send Form box. If your pen buzzes while you are writing, then it may be that it has the wrong firmware version. Contact Support for further information.

TIP: Make sure the paper you are writing on is supported (e.g. on a clipboard). The pen will also keep buzzing if used on bent or crumpled paper or if pressing the pen too hard on the paper.

How can I view time stamps and pen ids associated with a document?

Select Tools – Options – View Search Tab and then select the required criteria.

Will I lose any data if the pen buzzes red?

The Pen will not delete any data until it can connect to a phone and the message has been sent to the phone. Data can only be lost from the pen if the pen memory has been deleted through a pen master reset.

The digital pen does not turn on when I take off the pen cap

Make sure the digital pen is fully charged. Insert the digital pen into the USB cradle to recharge the battery. If recharging does not correct the problem, the battery may be dead.

If your digital pen does not charge when connected to the cradle please check the following:
  1. Make sure your computer is turned on.
  2. Make sure the USB cradle is connected to your computer’s USB port.
  3. Try using another USB port on the computer.
  4. Try plugging the USB into the wall charger.

The Pen buzzes red when I try to send a document through

This can be due to the following scenarios whereby your pen will buzz red after approx 5-10 seconds when you tick Send on the document:

  • No Bluetooth connection between the pen and phone -> Make sure the pen is paired to the phone
  • Bluetooth is not activated on the phone -> Confirm that Bluetooth is set to On and the phone’s visibility is set to Shown to All
  • The pen does not have enough battery charge and power is about to run out -> Refer to the Pen Guide to check battery status
  • The phone is switched off or not near the pen for Bluetooth connection -> Make sure the pen is within 1-2 metres of the phone.

TIP: Another option also is to restart the phone and try to tick the Send Form box again on the document.*

(*disclaimer – please be aware that this could result in a blank form being sent.)

How do I know Bluetooth is switched on the phone?

You should see some sign of Bluetooth activity or symbol on the phone. Make sure Bluetooth is switched On and the “Phone’s visibility” is NOT hidden. This varies depending on phone model.

The digital pen is not responding

If the digital pen does any of these things, you may need to reset it:

  1. Does not turn off when you put the cap on.
  2. Does not vibrate after you mark an Anoto pidget box.
  3. Vibrates when you attempt to write with it.
How do I configure fastdox for multi-user environments?

It is necessary to set the libraries for each Fastdox to point at the same network
folders, it is then possible to print from one pc and dock at another.

Why is my digital pen flashing red and not synchronising with fastdox?

Why is my digital pen flashing red and not synchronising with
fastdox?

Digital pens manufactured prior to 2008 require a firmware upgrade, please contact
your relevant Digital Pen supplier for details.

How do I synchronise my digital pen time with my pc?

Time stamp synchronisation can be set up to automatically take place within the
Anoto Pen Director Platform. Select the icon in the bottom right hand corner of the
screen, select ‘synchronisation’ and select ‘Set pen time' each time is docked.

I have lost document functionality

For example if you are having problems with email, save or print.

It may be that the registration of your pen key has been lost or not originally
completed, press F5 to refresh the program and re-enter your pen key.

Why didn’t my action run?

It is essential that commands are run in order for them to be accurately carried out,
i.e. printing must commence after the action is set.

GAPAT Troubleshooting

Use the instructions below when GAPAT errors occur. It is strongly recommended that this investigation be done by a support representative via remote support session.

In order for GAPAT to function properly, verify that each of the following are true:

GHOSTSCRIPT INSTALLED
1. Navigate to %COMMONPROGRAMFILES%\Anoto\gs, typically C:\Program Files\Common Files\Anoto\gs
2. Document the presence of a gs#.## subfolder, where #=a number
3. Beneath gs#.## subfolder, verify the presence of bin and lib subfolders
4. Verify the presence of files in both bin and lib subfolders
5. Document the full path to the bin and lib subfolders

PATH ENVIRONMENT VARIABLE
1. Control Panel > System Properties > Advanced
2. Click Environment Variables button
3. In System variables (bottom half of dialog), verify the presence of a variable named PATH (may be Path)
4. Verify that fully-qualified paths to both Ghostcript bin and lib subfolders (see above) exist in PATH’s Value, e.g., C:\Program Files\Common Files\Anoto\gs\gs9.99\bin and C:\Program Files\Common Files\Anoto\gs\gs9.99\lib

GAPAT FILES IN PLACE
1. Navigate to the application’s install folder, e.g., C:\Program Files\Digital Paper
2. Verify the presence of a gapat subfolder
3. Verify the presence of a data subfolder in the gapat subfolder, as well as other subsequent underlying subfolders and files

GAPATHOME ENVIRONMENT VARIABLE
1. Control Panel > System Properties > Advanced
